how can i tell if a 1200 engine i have is 1200n or 1200s ?

i have looked at the motor and on the engine block this was typed:

21B
33
78
2193010 (Edit 05/09; 12*2193010 is correct, i removed some dirt.. )

on the engine head this was typed:

33
90088353


does this say if the engine is 1200n or 1200s ? please help me.

Hello kammiz,

on the left side of the engine is the engine-number who begins with "12S-" or "12-" or "12S*" or "12*". When there is a "12S" you have a S-Engine, when there is only a "12" its a N-Engine.

Yes, left side is driver side. Usually you take about left or right in the driving direction. (forward)

Hi Kammiz,

no, that`s not correct: A star means it`s a 12 engine with 55 hp, without the star it has 52 hp. A 12S must show the stamp "12S-..."
This is simmilar to the engine type 11: Without a star it has 45 hp and with it has 50 hp.

so 12* means this is a 55hp 12n engine?

Hi Kammiz,

yes, it is a 55 hp engine. It was built for the Kadett C from the '76 model up to the '79 one. The following Kadett D was available with both 12-type engines too, but the normal version has 53 hp and the 12S has 60 hp as usual.
The Ascona and Manta B series were availbale with the 12* engine, too.

soo you are making a POWERkadett i got hold of a 12s engine today, with 61000km since new ... the car was scrapped of a 15year old kid for the fun of it , luckily he never got it running (thanks to his father who took the ignitiondistributor so the wouldent drive off)

where should the star that indicates it is a 12n with 55 hp be? because, i finally got at 12s engine, but where the enginenumber is it says 12s* and then the engine number.

somebody told me the star after 12 or 12s is just to indicate that the following numbers are the engine number.

should the star on the 12n 55hp be somewhere else on the engine block?
